2027 Long Weekends List

Every year it's the same story. A long weekend comes, the whole group says "chalo kahin chalte hain", and by the time everyone agrees on a plan, the hotels are full and the cabs are booked. So this time, let's plan early.

And for each one, we've added where you can go from Delhi by tempo traveller. Why a tempo traveller? Because when 8, 12, 15 or 20 people travel together, one big van is cheaper than three cars, nobody has to drive, and the antakshari never stops.

2027 long weekends list at a glance

2027 has four long weekends that come on their own, and two big 9 day breaks if you take three days of leave. Here's the full list, in order:

A few holidays fall in the middle of the week, so they need two days of leave to become a 5 day break: Eid-ul-Fitr (Wed 10 Mar), Muharram (Wed 16 Jun) and Janmashtami (Wed 25 Aug). Sadly, Independence Day (15 Aug), Gandhi Jayanti (2 Oct), Dussehra (9 Oct), Guru Nanak Jayanti (14 Nov) and Christmas (25 Dec) all fall on a Saturday or Sunday this year.

Note: These dates are from the DoPT list for central government offices in Delhi. Eid, Bakrid and Muharram depend on the moon, and private companies follow their own lists, so check with your office before booking.

Delhi se tempo traveller mein kahan ghoomein? Weekend by weekend

Republic Day weekend (23–26 January): Jaipur or Jim Corbett

January in the north is cold, so this is a good time to head towards Rajasthan. Jaipur is about 280 km from Delhi, around 5 to 6 hours in a tempo traveller. The forts look lovely in the winter sun, and you can add a day in Pushkar if you have four days.

If your group prefers jungle and bonfires, go to Jim Corbett instead. It's around 250 km away, and January is great for safaris. Book your safari permits early because long weekends sell out fast.

Holi + Good Friday (20–28 March): Vrindavan, then the Himachal hills

This is one of the best breaks of the year. Nine days off for just three days of leave.

Start with Holi in Mathura and Vrindavan, only about 160 km from Delhi. Playing Holi there with your whole group is something you will remember for years. Then head up to the hills. Dharamshala, McLeodganj and Dalhousie are pleasant in late March, and the roads are clear before the summer rush. A 12 or 17 seater tempo traveller is perfect for this kind of long circuit.

Only have the Good Friday weekend? Do a quick 3 day trip to Rishikesh. Rafting season starts around this time.

Ram Navami + Mahavir Jayanti (15–19 April): Rishikesh, Haridwar, Mussoorie

Five days off with just one day of leave. April is warm in Delhi but still pleasant in the hills.

This is a great family trip. Take a dip and watch the Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar, spend a day in Rishikesh, then drive up to Mussoorie or Dhanaulti for cool weather. Everything is within 300 km of Delhi, so there are no very long driving days.

If you have devotees in the family, Nainital and Kainchi Dham are another good

option.

Bakrid + Buddha Purnima (15–23 May): Manali, Kasol or Kedarnath

May is peak summer, and everyone wants to escape the Delhi heat. Nine days gives you time to go far.

The classic choice is the Shimla–Kullu–Manali circuit with a day in Kasol. Manali is about 530 km from Delhi, so leave Friday night and you'll reach by morning. If your group is more spiritual, the Kedarnath and Badrinath temples open in late April or May, and nine days is just right for a Do Dham yatra.

Just remember, this is the busiest week of the year in the hills. Book your tempo traveller and hotels at least a month ahead.

Diwali weekend (29–31 October): Agra, Jaipur or a quiet hill stay

Most families want to be home for Diwali, so this is better for a short trip just after the puja. Agra and Vrindavan make an easy 2 day outing. For something calmer, a homestay in Kanatal, Lansdowne or Nainital gives you fresh air and clear skies after the monsoon.

Christmas to New Year (25 Dec – 2 Jan 2028): Rajasthan desert or snow in Himachal

Take five days off and you get nine days to end the year with a bang. Two great options:

  • Rajasthan: Jaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, with a night in the desert camps on New Year's Eve.

  • Snow: Manali or Shimla for snow (if you are lucky), with bonfires and warm food every evening.

For hill roads in December, ask for a driver who has driven in snow before, and keep a buffer day in case roads close.

Tips for booking a tempo traveller on a long weekend

Book early. On long weekends, good tempo travellers in Delhi get booked 3 to 4 weeks in advance. For the May and December breaks, book even earlier.

Leave the night before. Start on Friday night or at 4 to 5 AM on Saturday. You'll skip the worst highway traffic and save almost a full day.

Pick the right size. For 8 to 10 people, a 12 seater is comfortable. For 12 to 15 people with luggage, take a 16 or 17 seater. Don't squeeze everyone into a smaller van to save a little money.

Get the full price in writing. Ask what's included: per km rate, minimum km per day, driver allowance, tolls, parking and state permits. On hill trips, also ask whether the AC will stay on.

Keep one buffer day. Long weekend traffic near Manali, Mussoorie and Nainital can be very heavy. Don't plan to reach Delhi just hours before office on Monday.

So, when are you planning?

2027 has some really good breaks, especially the two 9 day windows in March and May. Put these dates in your calendar today, apply for leave early, and share this list in your family or friends WhatsApp group before someone else books the van you wanted.
